It’s that time of year again — time to spring forward **and reset our clocks. March 10, 2024 marks Daylight Savings Time this year, when we lose an hour of sleep in the spring at 2:00 AM. If you’re American, that is… and only in most states. Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST, nor do the territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
But why do we change our clocks twice a year? You may know it has something to do with giving us an extra hour of sunlight in the warmer months and have the sun rise later in the winter (Arizona’s climate and Hawaii’s proximity to the equator mean they don’t find this useful). But when did it start, and is it really necessary?
To think about Daylight Savings Time, we first need to think about time zones. Time zones were only first created in 1883 — before this, there were over 144 times in North America. This wasn’t an issue until trains became more ubiquitous, and their schedules became increasingly difficult to coordinate. Time zones were thus created as a way to standardize time so train schedules could run more smoothly.
The responsibility of creating and coordinating these time zones fell on transportation agencies. In 1883, the railroads officially began operating on a system of four time zones. Later, those four turned to five time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, and Alaska, all of which are still in use today.
Okay, now we have time zones, but Daylight Savings Time is still a thing of the future. It wasn’t until World War I that the idea became a reality. In 1918, the United States implemented the Standard Time Act, which was a missive meant to conserve energy during the war by minimizing the use of artificial light and maximizing the use of daylight in order to conserve fuel and energy for the war effort. It was first started by Germany only two years earlier in 1916. Again, transportation agencies were responsible for coordinating the country’s time, and the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) implemented DST for seven months in 1918, after which it fell out of use.
It was then implemented again during World War II, except this time states could choose to stay on DST (or “War Time”) or not after the war’s end. It wasn’t until 1966 that the newly created Department of Transportation was given the responsibility by Congress to create and regulate country-wide standardized time. Thus, with the 1966 Uniform Time Act, Daylight Savings Time became official in the United States.
Not everyone is a proponent of DST. It has proven adverse affects on people’s circadian rhythms, making it harder for some of us to create consistent sleep schedules. Many farmers argue against DST, because milking and feeding schedules don’t change just because clocks do. In 2022, the U.S. Senate approved the “Sunshine Protection Act,” which would extend DST throughout the whole year, ending the need to spring forward or fall back. However, this bill still has not been passed as of March 2024.
For now, it seems like DST is here to stay. So get ready to change your clocks, and remember to hit the hay an hour early on the 9th!

It’s January of a brand new year, which means you’re more likely than not to have some New Year’s resolutions. Although it’s important to let you know that there’s absolutely no need to change who you are, and the pressure that these resolutions can put on us can sometimes counteract the benefits of accomplishing them, we recognize that resolutions can be a great way to kickstart your year. If you are making some New Year’s resolutions, we’ve got some great tips for you so you can actually stick to them, and accomplish all your goals for the new year!
Keep them realistic
If you have never exercised before, setting a new year’s resolution that you’ll get a gym membership and start working out for an hour every single day isn’t going to be realistic for you. People can tend to set pretty unrealistic resolutions as they look at January as a fresh start to become a brand new person. But you don’t need to be a new person! If there’s things you’d like to change, or start doing, make sure you’re taking small steps so you don’t wear yourself out. This will make it far more likely that you’ll be able to stick to your goals! For example, setting a goal of taking a ten minute walk outside every day is much more manageable than an hour stint on the treadmill.
Be specific
Let’s say you want to start meditating four times a week in the new year. You’re more likely to accomplish this goal if you set specific days and times for your meditation sessions. Simply saying “I’ll do this four times a week” isn’t a specific enough resolution; imagine how easy it would be to just tell yourself you’ll do it tomorrow… and then you’re caught in a cycle of procrastination. Being specific with your resolutions forces you into a schedule and routine that you’ll very quickly adapt to!
Stay accountable
How many times have you talked yourself out of doing something? It comes pretty easily, especially if it’s something you’re resistant to, such as a boring chore or exercise. Having someone else to stay accountable to prevents you from skipping out on a resolution due to that pesky voice in your head. Let a friend or family member in on your resolution, and ask them to keep you in check. Offer to do the same for them, and you can start a pretty great system of accountability!
Gamify your goals
There’s a reason people enjoy playing games — they’re fun! Not to mention the massive dopamine hit you get from a satisfying win. Gamifying your goals can help you get more excited about not only accomplishing them, but also the act of doing them as well. A great way to do this is to set small rewards for yourself at various milestones. Let’s say your resolution is to keep your home clean. What if each time you vacuum the house, you let yourself watch your favorite TV show? You can also assign points to various tasks, and give yourself a reward after a certain number of points — washing the dishes can be ten points, taking out the trash can be five, etc. Rolling dice is another great way to gamify your chores — assign each chore a number, and roll the die to decide for you what chore to do! It takes decision fatigue out of the equation and makes you feel like you’re playing a game.
Have you made any New Year’s resolutions this year? Has there been a method that’s worked great for you in the past? Let us know in the comments — we love to hear from you!

As 2023 comes to a close, we’re thinking about all the ways we can step into 2024 as even better, more productive versions of ourselves. There’s nothing like the chaos of the holidays to remind you how valuable productivity and organization can be! Especially when you want to be spending less time working or doing chores and more quality time with your loved ones. Luckily, tech can be our best friend, especially when it comes to helping us organize our lives. Let’s take a look at some of the best apps for productivity this year.
It can be difficult to wake up in the morning. If you find yourself snoozing (or even sleeping through) your alarm, Alarmy will help you be the morning person of your dreams. You can set missions in the app to go along with your morning alarm (like a math problem or a memory game) that will get you up and alert. You can also set bedtime alarms to remind you to hit the hay at the same time every night.
If you have an endless running to-do list in your head, it can be hard to focus on anything else. And those scraps of paper you’re jotting them down on and then losing aren’t cutting it anymore. TickTick helps you organize all of your to-dos and your calendar, and lets you sync everything across all of your devices. You can set deadlines, create to-dos from emails, organize things into different folders and categories, and more.
I love writing with pen and paper, but it can make it difficult to keep your notes organized and accessible. OneNote is a great digital notebook that lets you organize, revise, and share with others. And you can add mixed media like websites or pictures.
Notion is a fantastic shared digital workspace that makes working digitally a breeze. Connecting with coworkers has never been easier, from calendars to endless room for documents, you can do mostly anything on Notion. And you can use it for your personal life, too — think of it like a digital assistant. You can create mood boards, various calendars, to-do lists, and more.
Turn your goals and habits into a fun immersive gaming experience. This habit-building app helps you track your goals while doleing out rewards for goals met, and treating any blocks like literal monsters to defeat. And you can do it with friends for an extra layer of accountability!
We’re so lucky to live in a world that values productivity while also recognizes how difficult it can be. Sometimes, a good app is all that you need to change your mindset and your habits.
Do you use any of these apps? What’s your favorite way to stay productive? Let us know in the comments — we always love to hear from you!

As 3D printing becomes more ubiquitous and accessible to the average joe, more and more artists are seeing it as a viable medium, and an opportunity to expand their work and create things they never could have before. 3D printing allows an artist’s imagination to be utilized in nearly limitless ways, which is amazing for a community based in creativity. As a tech and art inspired company, we’re thrilled to see how technology can be used to inspire and create art. Here are some of the most popular ways artists are using 3D printing to enhance their art.
1. Replicating historical works/art preservation
We have the benefit of thousands of years of art to look back on to inspire us. One of the great aspects of 3D printing is it allows artists to replicate existing pieces. There are some questions to the authenticity of these pieces, but it seems like a better alternative than not having a reference of these pieces at all. For example, the Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro recreated pieces when a fire destroyed over 90% of the 20 million artifacts housed in the museum. Think about it this way, too — if there’s a historical piece falling into ruin, or one that can’t be moved to a museum, 3D printing can bring the piece to people all over the world without compromising the integrity of the original.
And yes, replicas have always existed, but 3D printing also allows for a more comprehensive and precise replica, one which includes all the original brushstrokes and paint texture, for example.
2. Art for the visually impaired
Accessible art is so important for bringing art to those who may have previously not been able to enjoy it. In 2021, Getty Images and the National Federation of the Blind and Tactile Images worked together to turn over 45 million 2D images into 3D prints that visually impaired people could feel and experience. Other museums have 3D printed paintings with more pronounced brushstrokes for the same purpose.
3. Bringing photographs to life
Some may say a photograph brings an object to life — but what if you can take it a step further? Converting 2D images to lithophanes adds an extra dimension to photographs — literally! Lithophanes have been around for hundreds of years, but being able to convert a photograph directly into the 3D raised surface is a new phenomenon thanks to 3D printing. The above is from the YouTube video at 2:47.
4. Bypassing design issues
Most artists create an initial sketch or model before creating their final piece. 3D printing allows artists to delve into design issues in the modeling stage. They’re able to find and solve problems with the piece before wasting time and precious materials in the final stage. Realizing the proportion of your statue’s arm is off in miniature, rather than when you’ve finished actually creating your statue, is so much better!
3D printing is used by so many artists in so many areas, from architects to interior designers to movie and theater prop makers to painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelry makers — whatever medium you can think of, you can 3D print it!
What a cool way to join art and technology together in a working harmony.
Let us know in the comments below if you have thoughts about this technology!

Having a smart phone can sometimes feel like having magic in your pocket. Any information you want at the speed of light (depending on your cell signal), being able to communicate with anyone, anywhere in the world, whenever you want, at the touch of a…well, no more buttons, but at the tap of a screen! But did you know there are also some cool smart phone hacks you probably didn’t know about? These tech tips can take your phone to the next level!
IPHONE
1. Scan a document
Rather than taking a blurry picture of a document you need to upload, your iPhone will scan it for you! Go to the notes app and create a new document. Click on the camera icon and select “Scan Documents.” Your phone will automatically scan only the document (it won’t process any backgrounds in the image) and also lets you adjust the edges to make a perfect rectangle. Select “Keep Scan” when you’re happy, and then select save. You can download the scan to your phone or computer, or send it somewhere else.
2. Make your phone colorblind friendly
You can actually change the color on your phone to greyscale. People who are colorblind say it helps them see their apps better, but it also has a secret added bonus — without the bright colors of the apps drawing your eye, some people also say it’s made them feel less addicted to their phone! To change the colors on your phone, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Color Filters. There are various filters to choose from!
3. Search photos
We’ve all dealt with the endless scroll through the camera roll trying to find an image. Did you know you can search your images based on what (or who) is in the photo? Say you’re trying to find a pic of your pet — just go to your photos app and select “Search,” then type in “dog.” You can search by person, place, date, and more.
4. Edit texts
Autocorrect or typos has gotten the best of all of us at some point. Now on iMessage, you can long-click on a message to edit it after it’s been sent. Talk about magic! And if the text is really bad, you can “Undo Send” for a short period of time after the text has been sent. Just make sure to do this last one quickly!
ANDROID
1. Customize app volume
On an Android phone, you can customize the volume for different apps, meaning you won’t have to change the main volume on your phone each time you open a different app (ringtone, messages, alerts, alarms, etc.). Press the “Volume Up” key, then tap on the three dots at the top to adjust your levels.
2. Speed up your charge time
This actually works for all smartphones, but putting your phone in airplane mode while it’s charging will nearly double its charging speed. Great for when you need a quick charge but don’t need to use your phone while it’s charging.
3. Use wellbeing features
Android has a few features that are focused on helping you live your best life — which includes having healthy tech habits. Bedtime Mode silences your phone and changes your screen to greyscale so you can get some much-needed shut eye. Focus mode silences app notifications for a set period of time. Work Profile actually hides your work apps when it’s time to clock out, so you can enjoy a healthy work-life balance.
4. Increase storage
Unlike iPhones, Androids allow you to snag more storage using a microSD card. It’s also a great way transfer large files between devices. With some Androids, you can even plug in a USB storage drive.
No matter what smartphone you have, these phone hacks are great ways to make your life just a little easier — and we all can use some of that! Phones are such a huge part of our daily lives, we might as well make them work as hard as they can for us!
Did you know any of these cool phone hacks? Let us know which ones you plan on using in the comments — we love to hear from you!If you’re still holding on to the cellphone you had ten years ago because you never knew what to do with it, you’re not alone. It feels wrong to just… throw it away. However, with technology moving as light speed, electronics like cellphones, laptops, tablets, and even headphones get phased out so much faster than they used to, which means you can find yourself with a pile of electronic waste (e-waste) that you don’t know what to do with. According to the smartphone recycling company, Decluttr, “Approximately 57.4 million metric tons of e-waste was generated worldwide in 2021.” And that number isn’t slowing down any time soon. As we continue to phase through cellphones quicker and quicker, e-waste builds more and more, filling our landfills and leaching chemicals into the ground. And if they’re burned, those chemicals are released into the air, contributing to global warming.
The good news is these electronics can be recycled just like paper and plastic? Recycling is especially important for things like batteries, that can be hazardous if simply thrown away.
The first step is to make sure your devices are wiped of any personal information (this applies to phones, computers, tablets, etc.) by performing a factory reset (just make sure you have everything you want saved). From then on, you have a few options. If its in good enough shape, you can resell the device to be reused. There’s plenty of companies, like Decluttr, that can help you with that process. Many cellphone companies allow you to trade in your old device and receive a discount on your new one. But if you really just want to get rid of it, try getting a hold of Call2Recycle, one of the biggest recycling programs in the U.S. It allows you to bring e-waste to places like Best Buy or Home Depot to recycle at no cost to you. Goodwill also offers a recycling program.
As for batteries, they are actually considered hazardous waste in the state of California, and have to be dealt with appropriately. Luckily, it’s not too big of a deal to recycle batteries. Call2Recycle has an e-waste disposal directory where you can search for the closest place to bring your old batteries and other e-waste.
Yes, it takes a little more effort than simply tossing your old headphones or cellphone or batteries in the trash, but think of all the good you’ll be doing our environment by taking the small extra step to recycle your e-waste. We all live on this earth, and have to treat it with kindness!
Do you recycle your e-waste? Let us know about your experience in the comments. We always love to hear from you!

Hi, it’s Sun! We just came back from a trip to Seoul, South Korea with my family, and I have so much to tell you. Alex is pictured above at the Incheon Airport (and yes, he does wear his Story Spark tees every day).
As you know, Story Spark is all about the intersection of art and tech, and how these two seemingly vastly different worlds can come together to create something beautiful. What I wasn’t expecting was to experience this firsthand, all around me, in Korea.
To be honest, my expectations of Korea weren’t terribly high. My parents immigrated from Korea, and I grew up hearing lots of tall tales, mythical-sounding stories, and random anecdotes that peppered my understanding of the country, along with some binging of kdrama and listening to kpop. Alongside this, I had never actually traveled outside the United States before. Those two things coupled together with a massive language barrier (I still only know how to say “where’s the bathroom” in Korean) left me a bit wary of what to expect. But truly, from the second we touched down, my expectations were blown out of the water, and then some.
The first thing I noticed, and something I continued to notice everywhere I went on this trip, was how clean Seoul is. From subway stations to public bathrooms to the streets themselves, everything felt sanitized and clean. You weren’t loathe to grab a railing or sit on a public bench, and you didn’t fear stepping in gum or dog poop.
The streets were impeccable. I didn’t see a single piece of litter, not even on the subways (which we took often) despite there not being a ton of public trashcans. There were also a lot of safety features that were new to me, including public fire extinguishers and safety buttons you can press if you need help.
Oh, and the bathrooms especially! All of them were incredibly clean, even the ones at the subway station. The toilets in Seoul always have the lid closed, but the cleanliness meant I wasn’t even hesitant to touch it to lift it. I noticed a button in most bathrooms you could press if you had any issues (ran out of toilet paper, maybe?). It definitely works — I tried. Someone from the station answered immediately and asked what I needed. And a lot of the bathrooms even have bidets! It felt like a true VIP experience.
Adding to the clean ‘vibe’ was all the greenery, something you don’t always expect in a big city. There was greenery everywhere, from the street dividers to purposeful trees to shade you and shelter you from the summer rain, to streets lined with flowered shrubs.
The second thing I realized about Korea is that it’s an incredibly thoughtful, connected society that really cares for each other. The country loves its people, and the people love their country. It was noticeable right away in Incheon Airport, where the first thing I saw after getting off the plane was a golf cart carrying elderly passengers through the airport. There was a massive thoughtfulness for the elderly in public spaces (which makes sense in a society that has a lot of respect for the older community).
The way art and tech combined with each other was noticeable at every street corner, in every shop, really wherever you went. The iconography was consistent throughout the city (meaning the person on walk symbols or stop symbols looks the same on all signage in buildings and public spaces). The architecture was incredibly artistic; it felt like looking at artistic designs every time you saw a new building, like being in an outdoor, living museum. The plethora of statues, interactive billboards, and immersive art installations inside random places like retail stores really added to that feeling. Even this truck that was selling everything on it felt like a piece of moving art! Need a pan or broom, anyone?
At the same time, you spot women riding robots to sell yogurt; you pay at an automated kiosk at most cafes and restaurants (although there is always a real person to help you if you need it); there’s air conditioning on all the buses, subways, and hotels we encountered.
I could truly go on and on about how wonderful Korea was and because of how clean it appeared it made me feel safe walking around in a country I just met. I am already looking forward to a return trip, and my creative gears are turning and I feel so inspired by everything I saw and experienced. Here are photos from the Gentle Monster store, architecture styles, and public art installations.
At the end of our journey, I found myself in complete awe of the remarkable country we had just encountered. Korea stood as a testament to the harmonious fusion of art and technology, beautifully expressed through the artistic architecture, unified iconography, and immersive art installations that adorned Seoul's landscapes. Beyond its technological marvels, it was a place where the bonds of society were woven with care and compassion, evident in the way its people looked out for one another. As we bid farewell to Korea, a simple message on a napkin encapsulated the essence of our experience, leaving us with a lasting appreciation for this extraordinary nation.

]]>Do you know how much time you spend looking at a screen each day? You might not even realize how often you’re actually staring at the “black mirror.” Between checking the time, turning off morning alarms, checking emails, and everything else that comes with being a human in a digital age, we’re seemingly tethered to our devices. Even now, I’m writing this on a screen. Our lives are interlocked with screens. There’s a ton of upsides to technology, of course. But every once in a while, it’s good to take the time to put the screens away and go off the grid, even if only for a day.
There have been endless studies that show the positive benefits of unplugging yourself from technology, both mental and physical. Spending too much time in front of a screen can negatively impact you physically, from eye strain to neck, hand, and wrist issues. It also takes a toll on your mental health — social media has been shown to increase negative feelings such as isolation, depression, and jealousy. The benefits of unplugging are as myriad as the negative impact of staying glued to your screen. From increased productivity to better sleep to decreased anxiety and depression, most people that study the effect of technology agree that it’s crucial to get away from it every once in a while.
This isn’t to say that technology is the ‘bad guy.’ So much of our lives are intertwined with technology because of the positive benefits it has on our lives. Having endless information at our fingertips keeps ignorance at bay. Tasks are simplified, time is saved, and transportation is easier. But it’s important to realize that we are pretty reliant on technology, and taking a break is important for our health, and also a great way to reconnect with nature, ourselves, and each other.
Think about how much more connected you’d feel to your loved ones by spending an afternoon together with no phones, television, or computers. How much more in tune with yourself you’d be if you weren’t being bombarded by the opinions of strangers on the internet. How peaceful a walk in your neighborhood would be without music or a podcast playing in your ears. Think of how much you’d be able to get done! Read that book you’ve been eyeing on your shelf, paint that picture, play that board game.
Commit to unplugging for one day, and see where it takes you.
]]>Bright lights and color, loud sounds, dopamine-releasing outcomes — all of these and more are characteristic of both gaming and gambling. We talk a lot in society about gambling being addictive, but we don’t seem to have the same depth of conversation around gaming, especially when it comes to children. But the fact of the matter is, gaming is just as addicting as gambling. Studies have shown that gaming addictions easily progress into gambling addictions, especially games with simulated gambling (like online social casino games). Basically, players who play games with gambling elements are more likely to gamble IRL, as are players who already have “problematic” gaming habits.
You might think that the two are very different, because gaming relies on skill whereas gambling relies on chance. But here’s where the main issue arises — loot boxes.
A loot box in a video game is anything that the player purchases with real-world money to improve their gaming experience, whether it’s gear upgrades, character enhancements, extra lives — all of which are randomized within the game. Suddenly, the outcome of the game or your experience within the game isn’t just based on your personal skill, but how much money you’re spending on chance. You’ve now turned a simple game into a game with a massive gambling component.
Imagine playing a game and stumbling upon a locked chest full of rewards. You want those rewards, but have to shell out to open the chest. And it’s so easy, too. On your phone, a simple press of a button charges the credit card on file, making it super simple for children who play these games to rack up charges without their parents even knowing until they get the bill at the end of the month. And it’s definitely a feature that children are affected by — almost 40% of children who play online games use loot boxes.
Studies have shown that loot boxes in particular have direct links to gambling and gambling addiction. A report that looked into 13 studies on the issue concluded that loot boxes “were ‘structurally and psychologically akin’ to gambling.” Some countries, like Belgium, have classified loot boxes as gambling products, and the UK is working towards the same classifications in their own laws.
Mobile and online games are incentivized to keep offering loot boxes because it’s how they make their money. Most of these games are offered for free, making them seem innocent enough to a parent whose child wants to play a game on their iPad, or an adult who wants something to do with their phone while binging Netflix. But because of these gambling components, these games are able to offer their services for free because the loot boxes more than make up for the cost of creating the game. There’s even a term for certain people, called “whales,” that spend so much money that they make up for those who spend nothing. In the UK, only about 5% of loot box users generate 50% of the 700 million-dollar loot box market.
We have to be more conscious about the games that we play, or allow our children to play. Even if they seem innocuous, there are some serious repercussions lying just under the surface. One way to help change this is to simply have conversations about it. A lot of people don’t understand the psychology behind addictive gaming or how it leads to gambling problems. After all, how easy is it to say, “oh, I’ll pay 99 cents to get past this puzzle.” Heck, I’ve done it before. We just need to be aware of how we’re playing, and make sure we’re keeping an eye on our habits before they spiral into something problematic.

The Evolution of the Drone: Where we started… and where we’re going
You’ve probably seen a drone before, small and compact, zipping overhead. We use them to take stunning aerial shots, kids fly them for fun, soldiers deploy them in war. Big businesses like Amazon are even using them for package delivery. But drones weren’t always the ubiquitous flying wonders we know and love today.
Initially, drones were solely used by the military. And the first iterations of the technology actually dates as far back as the 19th century, when Austrian soldiers utilized unmanned balloons to drop explosives on Venice in 1849. When the Wright Brothers brought flight to the public consciousness in 1903, people starting realizing they could used pilotless aircrafts. Nikola Tesla, the famous inventor and engineer, even had a hand in the first designs — he tried and failed to sell a radio controlled boat to the U.S. Navy.
The real progress started with the Ruston Proctor Aerial Target, a device considered to be the first real drone. It was created by Archibald Low, the “father of radio guidance systems,” who let his invention pave the way for further development. This unmanned aircraft was invented in 1916 during World War One, as military technology was rapidly expanding.
The time between the first and second World Wars was spent refining existing drone technology. The excitement came from the possibility to expand upon cruise missiles, which were single use. A drone, on the other hand, was simply a carrier, and could be reused. It was also incredibly useful as a training tool, and drones were frequently used as aerial target practice before World War Two. One such device, DH.82B Queen Bee, was thought to be the introduction into the term “drone.” In the 1930s, drone only referred to these aerial targets, but during the war the terms started to encompass any unmanned flying vehicle.
Drones continued to dominate military technology, constantly being improved upon. Now, however, it seems we’ve realized the potential for drone technology to improve our daily lives, not just in times of war. Disney used 300 drones for their 2016 Christmas light show, and in the U.S. alone there are 538,172 registered recreational drones (and 314,689 commercial ones). Agriculture is a big industry that utilizes drones, and UberEats has even tested drone delivery.
Next time you see a drone whizzing by, take a moment to remember its humble origins as simple small balloons carried by the wind, deployed by radio frequency signals. What started as a military tactic has turned into a commercial and recreational boom, and has become a staple in our modern lives. Who knows where drones will go next?
Let us know in the comments what you think about drones. Do you have one, or would you buy one? What would you use it for?

Mother’s Day is just around the corner (May 14), and we never want you left scratching your head wondering what to get the incredible and special women in your life. We’ve curated a list of our favorite techy gifts for moms this year, so you can make sure she spends Mother’s Day with a smile (and the perfect thoughtful present).
Nothing says pampering like shampoo and conditioner made especially for you. Treat mom to a subscription hair care service that caters to their unique hair needs.
Take the long hours out of cooking and delegate it to a single piece of cookware? Yes, please! An Instant Pot does all the hard work, so all she needs to do is sit back and relax while dinner practically takes care of itself.
If your mom loves books but finds herself short on time, an audible subscription is the perfect solution, so she can multitask and listen to her favorite books.
Are mom’s makeup brushes looking a little worse for wear? Make the cleaning process easier for her with an auto cleaner! With both a cleaning and drying feature, this is a great way to get her makeup brushes looking like new.
You never know when you need a quick touchup. A portable light-up mirror will let mom be able to check her makeup or grab that little piece of lettuce out of her teeth in a heartbeat.
Although we’re headed into summer, thinking ahead never hurt! When winter comes, keep mom’s hands warm and soft and still able to use her phone. These touchscreen gloves have pads on the fingertips that allow for easy swiping, typing, and picture-taking without baring sensitive hands to harsh weather.
Everyone wants to feel safe walking down the street. A personal safety alarm is a great way for women to feel in full control.
Tech doesn’t have to be bulky and ugly. If your mom has an apple watch and is looking for a chic upgrade, this adjustable, gold-plated link watch band will turn her apple watch into a luxury piece of jewelry.
Let’s be honest — how often do we really clean our water bottles? This self-cleaning water bottle uses LED light to keep both the bottle and the water inside clean and ready for use at any time.
Peace of mind when it comes to her pets is definitely a must. This dog tracker will let her know where her beloved pet has been, and can even track the pet’s activity so she can make sure her furry friend is getting enough exercise.
What do you think of these Mother’s Day gift ideas? Let us know in the comments below. If you need more inspiration, check out our Mother’s Day gift guide from previous years!
]]>"Our universe is a sea of energy – free, clean energy. It is all out there waiting for us to set sail upon it." - Robert Adams
You’ve probably heard of Earth Day, an annual worldwide holiday on April 22 that celebrates the Earth, and brings awareness to sustainability and environmental issues. But did you also know that there's an Earth Hour? That’s right — every March, citizens of all countries are urged to dig even deeper into their environmentalism and not just recognize the importance of taking care of the environment, but actually do something about it. Earth Hour is less a holiday and more of a campaign. It’s a single hour, usually the last Saturday in March, during which people (including businesses) are encouraged to turn off all their lights to conserve energy.
Earth Hour is a climate change created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and began in Sydney, Australia back in 2007. Now, it’s become a worldwide phenomenon where people host candle-lit parties to celebrate keeping their lights off and protecting their environment.
Of course, it takes more than a single hour once a year to help combat the effects of climate change. And individuals are not the biggest issue — yes, recycling matters, and keeping your carbon footprint low is important, but big businesses are the real climate change culprits. We as individuals are simply not capable of the amount of emissions created by industries. Luckily, as we become increasingly aware of the damage fossil fuels are doing to our atmosphere, companies are starting to look to tech to solve some of the big issues. Renewable energy tech is a booming industry, and in honor of Earth Day, we wanted to take a look at some of the latest advancements in sustainable technology.
1. Solar Powered Trains
Picture a train and you might have an image of a classic train leaving a billowing trail of black smoke in its wake. However, solar powered trains could be our future. A solar powered train can run all day without needing a recharge, and gives approximately 75% of the energy it uses back to the solar grid to be reused. And it’s already being put to use! The BBC has a great video on the idea.
2. Improved Wind Turbines
You’ve probably seen windmills, or at least images of windmills. Large, towering blades that rotate and create energy from the wind. But Vortex Bladeless, a Spanish startup, has created a wind turbine that doesn’t require blades at all. These turbines are quieter, more manageable, and safer for birds! They also don’t take up as much space as traditional wind turbines, meaning that they can be installed in more areas.
3. Glass Battery
Wouldn't you love a battery that lasts longer, is less expensive, is safer, and is better for the environment? Luckily, John B. Goodenough came up with a solution that does exactly this: the lithium-ion battery. They’re the battery used in most electric cars, and are so impressive that they won Goodenough a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019. The most impressive part? Goodenough (yes, that’s really his name) was 97 years old when he received the prize.
4. Modular Wave Energy Converters
Irish startup Seabased saw a common, everyday object, the buoy, and figured it could be put to greater use. It didn’t just have to sit (or rather, bob) there — it could harness the power of the ocean! They created the Modular Wave Energy Converter (WEC), which connects a buoy to generators on the seabed. The buoys take in the energy created by the waves, and transfers it to the generators.
5. Bio-Oil
Fossil fuels are the biggest contributor to global warming. One British startup, Phycobloom, wondered: what if we could create oil out of something other than fossil fuels? How about algae? Previous iterations of algae oil would create the oil by crushing and killing the algae (not very sustainable). Phycobloom genetically engineered algae to create its own oil, which it then releases into its surroundings. The same algae is used, making the process inexpensive and quick. Creating oil out of simple air, water, and sunshine (all it takes algae to grow) seems almost too good to be true.
How did you celebrate Earth Hour? What do you think of these new renewable sources of energy? Let us know in the comments — we always love hearing from you!

It’s pretty common to make a list of New Years resolutions — things you want for yourself for the coming year, anticipated projects or goals, anything that you wish to accomplish. As a small business, we’re committed to constantly improving, which means we also take a look at our yearly goals.
But when you’re sitting down to make your list, whether it’s a physical list or something you keep inside your head and your heart, consider the importance of connection. 2022 felt like a year full of reconnecting. We were slowly gathering together again after two years of staying indoors, isolated from one another, using technology to communicate and get together virtually. But now that we’re pretty much back in a space where we can get together IRL, it feels a bit like those connections are rusty.
Spending all that time talking to each other through screens definitely took its toll on our communication and connection. It can feel awkward, maybe even uncomfortable, to move back into in-person interactions.
At the end of the day, we’re all humans, and we crave that connection that we’ve been missing for so long. Making the time for your loved ones may have fallen a bit to the wayside, but let it return with a vengeance this year! Host dinner parties, take nature walks, have BBQs (when the weather permits!). There are so many ways for us to reconnect, and 2023 can be the year we finally do it with gusto.
What are some ways you plan to make the year the best it can? Please feel free to enter your thoughts in the comments below. Here's to an amazing year ahead!

How many times have you and a friend sent each other an emoji with no context, and completely understood what the other was trying to say? You probably don’t take the time to think about how crazy it is that we have come up with a completely unique way of communicating without using words. But in reality, we were talking in pictures long before cell phones and email. In fact, the very first iterations of written language were images (or logographs) known as hieroglyphics. This ancient Egyptian writing system, which dates back to the 28th century B.C.E., had around 1,000 unique characters, and even had a cursive version.
It does seem, though, that with the advancement of technology has come a new form of communication through the use of emojis. There are a few issues that come with emojis, mainly that they look very different on an iPhone than on an Android, and that some emojis can mean different things depending on your and your friends’ usage. The latter is true especially due to generational gaps; Gen Z, who grew up on platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, use emojis differently than Millennials, who started out using emojis on AIM and email with fewer options (back in the days when # was still known as the pound sign or number sign, not the hashtag). This also leads to “styles” within emoji communication. Some might think certain emojis — the crying laughing face, for example — are “dated,” while others might not understand why everyone is suddenly adding sparkles to emphasize every word.
The question then arises: can we effectively communicate using emojis, despite the fact that they look different across different platforms, and can sometimes mean different things to different people? It’s not so black and white. Like any language or form of communication, different communities are going to understand and use it differently. It seems that overall, we have a pretty decent understanding of how to communicate effectively using emojis. Other than the rogue grandma sending a laughing face in response to dire news, it does feel like we all “get it.” And emojis are becoming more inclusive as well, leading to more communities being able to use them in ways they couldn’t before (think emoji people in wheelchairs or with hearing aids, and the addition of multiple skin colors).
There will always be barriers, but that’s true for any language. We just have to watch and see how emojis continue to evolve as technology, and we as people, evolve alongside them.
Do you use emojis in your daily life? Do you have a favorite? Let us know in the comments — we always love hearing from you!

]]>When you think of technology, you probably think of smart phones, laptops, drones, and other modern wonders. However, technology dates back as far as humanity. The discovery of fire was a technological advancement, for instance. Technology is “the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life,” according to Brittanica, and this involves so much more than we often think about.
It can be difficult to remember just how far we’ve come as a society, especially because technological advancements grow exponentially — for example, computer speed has been [doubling each year] since the 1960s. There are less than fifty years between the invention of the television and sending a man to the surface of the moon. We can be forgiven for not looking back to the roots of technology, but it’s always important to remember where we came from and take the time to admire exactly what our ancient ancestors did with what they had. Here are some pieces of ancient technology you may have forgotten about.
Aqueducts
Fresh, running water that travels through empires and keeps waste out of cities feels less like a relic of the ancient past and more like a modern marvel. In actuality, ancient people had already devised a system to distribute clean water throughout their cities. The aqueduct was an impressive feat of engineering for the time, used by early Egyptian and Indian civilizations before being improved upon by the Romans. Engineers used gravity and natural land curves to help channel lake and spring water through a series of tunnels, bridges, pipes, and canals. This wasn’t a small feat — within the crowded city of Rome itself, 300 million gallons of water would pump through daily, keeping the Roman empire running efficiently. This water was used for everything from drinking and bathing to farming and mining. The Roman aqueducts were constructed over a period of about 500 years, between 312 B.C.E. to 226 C.E. A “newer” aqueduct built in 19 B.C.E. still supplies the Trevi fountain in the heart of Rome today.
Wax Tablets
Before the ubiquitous notebook and pencil, chalkboard and eraser, or Google doc, ancient civilizations came up with a way to write down important information — and then erase it. The wax tablet was an incredibly useful invention, helpful for note-taking, bookkeeping, school lessons, and more, and dates back to the 7th century B.C.E. in Italy. The wax tablet was a wooden board covered with a thick coating of beeswax, sometimes linked together with other tablets to create a sort of notebook. It was used in conjunction with a stylus, an instrument crafted out of wood, metal, or bone. The sharp end of the stylus would scratch into the wax, which was sometimes treated with a coating of soot so that the etched-in letters would show through more clearly. Its blunt end on the other side would erase the letters with heat (by heating either the tablet or the stylus itself, although this only worked with metal styli), rendering the wax tablet endlessly reusable.
Steam Engines
You could be forgiven for imagining the steam engine as a Victorian-era invention, a key player in the Industrial Revolution and modernity. In actuality, ancient civilizations were hypothesizing steam engine technology as early as the 1st century C.E. It’s described in a text by engineer Heron of Alexandria, although it was not put to use at this time. There are also records of an in-use steam-powered church organ in 1125, and Leonardo Da Vinci designed a steam-powered cannon called the Architonnerre.
Concrete
When you think of concrete, you probably think of bustling paved highways in modern cities. Today’s concrete is made of cement, stone, sand, and water. However, its initial forms date back to [1300 B.C.E.], when ancient Middle Eastern architects discovered that coating their clay homes in limestone created a chemical reaction that hardened and fortified the buildings. This is considered the earliest form of cement. Concrete itself dates back to around 650 B.C.E. in Jordan, used by Nabatean traders to help them live in harsh desert climes. A few hundred years later in 125 B.C.E., the Romans built the Pantheon, whose 142-foot wide dome is made of concrete.
Pyramids
Did you know that Cleopatra actually lived closer to the invention of the iPhone than she did to the building of the pyramids? That’s how ancient the impressive technology they used to build these lasting structures is! The Pyramids of Giza were built between 2550 B.C.E. and 2490 B.C.E., using a staggering 5.5 million tonnes of limestone, 8,000 tonnes of granite, and 500,000 tonnes of mortar in their construction. Much of the material was local, but some of it was actually important via boats that traveled down the Nile, some coming from as far as nearly 600 miles away.
It can be easy to overlook the immensely impressive feats of our fore-bearers, but it’s important to remember that technology isn’t just a modern concept or implementation. Ancient civilizations were building and creating and utilizing innovative resources just as much as we do now — and a lot of it is still standing! We only know of these technological advancements because of their lasting impact on society, and their remarkable preservation (think of the Pyramid of Giza, or the Pantheon, or the Roman aqueducts, all of which you can still visit today). So the next time you’re sending a text or driving your electric car, remember the engineers and architects who helped us get to where we are today.

With seemingly everything digital these days, from our most important (and private) messages to our email accounts, to even our bank details, it’s more important than ever to keep your information safeguarded against viruses and hackers. It’s not always easy to spot a virus or a scam, and you may not know how to protect yourself. Here are some top tips for avoiding computer viruses, and keeping all your valuable private information safe and sound where it belongs — with you, and only you!
1. Install Antivirus Software
This might seem like the most obvious answer, but not everyone knows about antivirus software, or which ones are safe to download. As long as the software is reputable and has been vetted, go ahead and download it. You won’t even notice it’s there as it runs quietly in the background.
2. Be Discerning With Attachments
You may have noticed that some email services such as Gmail will double-check with you before automatically downloading attachments. This is one of the easiest ways for a virus to find itself on your computer, so make sure you’re diligent in only opening attachments you’re expecting or that you recognize. If you’re not sure who it’s from or what it is, it’s always better to be safe than sorry and not open it at all.
3. Update Your System
It’s easy to ignore that “system update” notification. Who wants to deal with an update while in the middle of using their computer? But make sure you take the time to stay up to date with any software changes. It’ll help with getting rid of any flaws in the old system that would let hackers in. Oh, and make sure to do this on your phone, too!
4. Avoid Fishy Websites
This one’s a little harder, but pay attention to the url of the websites you’re visiting. If it doesn’t look like a real website (say, no .com, .gov, .edu, etc.) or has an odd mixture of numbers instead of a website name, it’s safer to not visit the site.
5. Choose Strong Passwords
Coming up with a long combination of letters, numbers, and punctuation marks feels like a pain, but it’s the safest way to make sure your passwords are difficult to hack, keeping your information better guarded. Tip: don’t use anything that denotes anything personal, like your birthday, pet’s name, first street name, etc.
Malware will always be out there, but luckily you can keep yourself protected as long as you take precautions. How do you keep your information safe from viruses? Let us know in the comments, we always love to hear from you!

Your brain actually craves stability and organization!
Have you ever tried to fall asleep at night with everything you have to do the next day swimming around in your head? It can make it hard to relax, which makes it even harder to start tomorrow off on a well-rested, optimistic note.
What about sitting down for the work day and you just can’t seem to focus? Or trying to remember that one thing you know you have to do, but just can’t seem to put your finger on?
The next time anything like this happens, we have the perfect solution: grab a pen and paper (or your phone, laptop, tablet, anything you can write on) and make a list. It is as simple as it sounds, — list making is incredibly beneficial to your overall happiness, productivity, and motivation. But how exactly can a short little list be so life-changing?
Gets you organized
Our heads can get pretty full, as can our plates when it comes to juggling work, personal life, events, and other to-dos. Creating a list helps you info-dump all those needs into an easy-to-read format, letting you clear your mind so you can better focus on how to execute your tasks. Once you get everything down, you can even organize your list into different categories — most to least important, easiest to hardest — whatever suits you at the time.
Keeps you accountable
It’s pretty difficult to make excuses for not finishing a task when there’s nothing keeping you accountable. A clear to-do list, sitting right there on your desk, or on your fridge, or as a nagging alert on your phone, is a helpful reminder and that little nudge we all need to stay on track.
Relieves stress
Did you know that your brain actually releases dopamine, the ‘happy hormone,’ when you complete a task? Even the smallest thing, like answering an important email or making your bed, can flood your system with this reward chemical. And guess what? Crossing tasks off your to-do- list is just as rewarding. This helps with stress relief, keeping you happy and calm throughout your day so you can achieve all your goals. And jotting down your goals in and of itself also relieves the stress that comes with having unfulfilled tasks.
One more for stress relief: As humans, we are practically wired to focus on the things we haven’t done yet, rather than the goals we’ve accomplished. Making a list can help you remember not only what you’ve yet to do, but also what you’ve already accomplished, leading to stronger feelings of satisfaction and less distraction during your day.
Helps with memory
The great thing about writing down your tasks is that it can actually trigger your memory of another task you might have forgotten. Go grocery shopping might remind you to clean out your fridge. Send email to boss could remind you to update the work calendar. Then you can add these newly-remembered tasks to your list, and you won’t have to wonder — “what was I going to do again?”
Assists in decision making
Having something like a pro-con list is extremely helpful when you have a big decision that you simply can’t seem to make. Having everything written down in front of you helps you see the facts of the situation more clearly than if everything was buzzing around in your mind. To-do lists can even help with this. If you’re stuck trying to figure out what task to start first, seeing them all written down can help you prioritize.
Motivates you
One of the biggest perks of having a list is that it helps you break down larger tasks so they seem less intimidating. Outline the first chapter is easier than write the essay. Do the dishes is better than clean the house. At the end of the day, having smaller, more manageable tasks will help keep you motivated, and prevent you from feeling burned out by everything you have to do. **
So the next time you’re feeling stuck or stressed or overwhelmed, remember that simply creating a list can help clear your head, set you on the right track, and help you accomplish all your goals!

Decentralized Autonomous Organization
As technology continues to expand, our vocabulary constantly needs updating. How many times have you gone to read the news and couldn’t wrap your head around the latest big move in tech? DAO is one of those phrases we encountered and went… “what?”
DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization. If you’ve been paying attention to the blockchain at all, the word decentralized might stand out to you. A DAO is a community-led organization, or legal structure, that operates much like cryptocurrency, in which it has no central authority and is managed and run by various community members. Every member has decision-making power, using tokens to cast their votes. The more tokens you have, the more voting power you have. This may sound hierarchical at first, but think of it this way: the more money you’ve invested, the more incentivized you are to vote in the best interest of the entity. You don’t want an organization going belly up when you’ve already invested your hard-earned cash (or bitcoin).
The first DAO was initially created in 2016 by software company Slock.it (now blockchains.com) as a way to raise funds, similar to crowdfunding sources like GoFundMe, but with the investors all having a chance to vote on how the company spent the money. Inspired by cryptocurrency, developers considered a DAO, with the intention to provide oversight, but by the members of the community, not by a single central authority. At the end of the day, everyone participating in a DAO is looking out for the best interest of the community, and working toward a common goal.
Every DAO has a different goal. Some have tons of money — over $10 billion, for the really successful ones. DAOs are a powerful community-building tool that, no matter what their goal, can pride themselves on transparency and autonomy. All voting results exist on the blockchain, meaning any member can trace the votes at any time. Everything is out in the open for everyone, and anyone that chooses to can have a say. Some DAOs even communicate via Discord, the social app we wrote about earlier.
What do you think about the concept of a DAO? Is it something you would participate in? Let us know in the comments — we always love hearing from you! And if you’re looking to brush up on your tech vocabulary, check out this list of definitions we created to make reading articles like this one a bit easier.

Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of your very own Story Spark shirt. But wait — what happens next?
The best part about quality clothing is that it can last a lifetime, as long as you know how to care for it. Luckily, we’re here to help.
Sometimes it can be hard to find inner peace while constantly being bombarded by social media. A myriad of studies show that constantly being on social media negatively affects your mental health. Chronic social media use can cause depression and even memory loss. It can also affect you physically, manifesting your social media anxiety into gut issues, headaches, and tense muscles. Even so, it can be hard to disconnect, especially when one can tend to feel left out when not engaging. With around 72% of the U.S. population using social media, it can feel nearly impossible to shut it all off.
But you have to focus on your own well-being, and although achieving peace in a tech-driven world can seem difficult, it doesn’t have to be. There’s many practices you can implement in your daily life that will help you de-stress and feel more fulfilled and connected with the real world.
1. Meditating
Okay, so maybe it seems silly to suggest you download an app while we’re discussing using tech less. But the great thing about tech is that you can use it to your advantage, and one of those ways is through a meditation app. Meditating will help you slow down your mind, focus on the present, and push away any negative thoughts. And there are plenty of apps, like Calm or Headspace, that can help guide you.
2. Going outdoors
Connecting with nature, even in a small way, is one of the best ways you can get in touch with the real world, and yourself. A quick walk around the block while listening to your favorite podcast — or better yet, while leaving your phone at home — can be just the start you need to start getting that Vitamin D. A stroll in the woods, by a lake, or in your local park is the perfect medicine for any stressors.
3. Locking away your phone
Social media can be addicting just like gambling, and it can be incredibly difficult to stop. If you’re at a point where going without your phone for an hour makes you break out into a rash, you might want to consider simply locking it away, so you have no choice but to step away. There are lock boxes made specifically for phones that work on timers that you set, so you can’t access the phone by any means until the timer is up.
4. Talking to friends in person
Texting and emailing is super convenient, but sometimes we need good old-fashioned face-to-face hangouts! Taking the time to grab a coffee with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while, or even spending an hour just chatting on the couch, can significantly improve your feelings of connection to others, and your overall happiness.
5. Practicing daily gratitude
What are you grateful for today? Focusing on the things that make you happy and thankful, rather than the negative things that you compare yourself to (that Instagram model is photoshopped, I promise you), will help you prioritize your needs and find gratitude in the little things.
Which one of these tips resonates with you? When in doubt, try all of them! You don’t have to completely upturn your life, but applying some of these practices will absolutely help you find some inner peace in a loud, tumultuous world.
