Five Favorite Tech Titles on the Big and Small Screen
Not sure what to do with your techie +1? Whether it's your significant other, friend, or an obligation, one failsafe activity is simply watch a movie or series–a story visualized, whether it's on a ginormous screen or mobile phone. Let's go beyond texting emojis and turn a storytelling experience into one that can go beyond the hour or two of entertainment. As techies, it's a no-brainer to check out the latest sci-fi or action flick, so we've started putting together a list of some of our favorite "tech-related" movies/series that you may find interesting or have forgotten. It's just the beginning, and we hope that you'll feel free to share your favs too.
#1. Black Mirror
Drama, Sci-Fi – 2011 Series
Created by Charlie Brooker
Hold your breath and angst as the very first episode dives right into the use and impact of social media. Personally, I couldn't get past the very first episode, as it peers into the dark side of tech. However everyone else I've spoken with will encourage you to continue on to the rest of the season. Shivers on the first episode: "The National Anthem".
#2. Ex Machina
Drama, Sci-fi – April 24, 2015
Directed by Alex Garland
This film unveils the consequence and even the confusion the human character may have with the concept of artificial intelligence. It looks like a human, speaks like a human, responds like a human, dances like a human, so.. is she human? Or am I asking the wrong question? It's interesting to see how the human audience responds to this. I personally enjoyed how visually stylized the movie is and how appealing the characters were.
Documentary – August 19, 2016
Directed by Werner Herzog
This documentary starts off strong with the history of the internet. Then it peels back the impact should the internet disappear from the face of the earth. It's an eye opener for sure, and I'm definitely going to UCLA to check out where the first message was sent between computers that gave birth to the internets.
#4. You've Got Mail
Comedy, Romance – December 18, 1998
Directed by Nora Ephron
Ahh going down memory lane now..remember AOL and its friendly and iconic message? "You've Got Mail" in the '90s... Let's revere how technology has changed and definitely how it changed the dating scene too. Or maybe it hasn't?
#5. The Matrix
Sci-Fi, Action – March 31, 1999
Directed by the Wachowski Brothers
My jaw dropped after realizing that this icon is 18 years old. Yes, The Matrix is old enough to vote! This movie strikes a chord on so many levels, right? Blue or red pill— a daily question for me, given how many choices we have in the media these days.
As mentioned, this is definitely an evolving list with more to come. At the time of this writing, these five were the first ones to pop into mind; as technology is launching us so fast into the future that it makes me think about the past. Which are some of your favorite tech-related titles that push you forward and pulls you back?
